Dear Todd,

The Cold and Flu season will soon be upon us. Now is the best time to start preparing your body and building your immune system. Did you know, eating certain foods and avoiding others can really boost your immune system and prevent you from getting sick?

Also, for all the pet lovers, see why fish oils high in omega 3 fatty acids are very beneficial to your dogs and cats overall health.

Our immune systems are under attack from a barrage of invaders including environmental pollution, stress, poor habits, sick people invading our space, lack of sleep and poor nutrition. So how are we to protect ourselves and keep healthy, especially through the cold and flu season? There are several things we can add into our daily routine can help ward off illness.

  • Avoid immunity defeaters. Cut down, or better, cut out fast foods and convenience foods that have little or no nutritional value. Especially avoid dairy which increases mucus production and feeds virus, fungi and bacteria. Also avoid foods that contain refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners as these items decrease your body’s ability to defend itself against microbial marauders.
  • Eat FOOD. Increase your intake of organic seasonal fruits and veggies and eat as many of them as raw as possible. If you need to cook your foods, do so minimally because over cooking or microwaving live foods will destroy the enzymes, bioflavanoids, vitamins, minerals and fibers that are so crucial for optimal health
  • Drink WATER. Not sodas, not coffees, not teas. Your body needs water to detoxify and eliminate properly. Adults need to drink eight-8oz glasses of water (aka 2 liters or ½ gallon) per day for normal physiologic functioning to take place.
  • Exercise, even if only moderate, will increase the oxygen exchange rate in the lungs as well as in the blood. This oxygenation contributes to cellular nutrient delivery and detoxification.
  • Get plenty of sleep. The human body requires 6-8 hours of regenerative sleep each night for proper mental and physiological functioning the next day.
  • De-Stress. It is estimated that 90% of illness and disease are stress related. Be sure to take time out to do something for yourself. Yoga, breathing exercises and meditation are great stress relievers.
  • Wash your hands – often. Washing your hands will help kill off bacteria and viruses before they reach your own nose and mouth. Instead of the antibacterial soaps that can actually increase bacterial resistance, use grapefruit seed extract cleansers like Citricidal, available here at the pharmacy.

For many years, pet owners have given fatty acids to their dogs and cats to change a dull, dry coat into a glossier one. Omega 3 oils from fish are one of the most powerful nutritional products, and help heal a large number of conditions. More and more, studies show that fatty acids play important roles in areas of skin and coat health, the control of inflammation, and the function of other body organs in dogs and cats. Research has shown that a ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 of 5:1 to 10:1 is optimal for dogs and cats and therefore supplementing with a high quality Omega-3 fish oil supports pet health.

The recommended amounts of EPA and DHA have been shown to benefit a number of medical conditions including: Allergies, Anti-inflammation, Arthritis, Bone Health, Cardiovascular Health, Dull and Dry Hair Coats, Eye Problems, Gastrointestinal Health, Glucose & insulin Homeostasis, High Cholesterol, Immune Function, Improved Brain Function, Joint Inflamation, Kidney Disease, Pain Relief, Skin Health and Yeast infections on the skin and in ears.

Dosing It is easy to administer (via gel caps or liquid) and most pets take either form well. CATS: 1 capsule daily, opened and placed on food DOGS: 1 capsule for each 20 lbs body weight, up to capsules twice daily opened and placed onto food.

How Quickly Will We Start Seeing Results? While the pet begins benefiting quickly, you may not notice a difference for 3-4 months. The pet’s body will change from the inside out—first the individual cells, then tissues, then organs. Gradually you’ll notice the coat and skin become more radiant. When you see this, you’ll know the internal organs, including the kidneys, liver, heart, and brain, are also experiencing more radiant health.

Today it's so easy for us to forget about seasons when we eat. Modern food processing and worldwide distribution of food make foods available year-round, and grocery stores shelves look much the same in December as they do in July. Eating seasonal foods allow you to get the most flavor and nutritional value for the most affordable prices. For the greatest freshness, look for foods that are locally grown.

Fruits: Apples, cantaloupes, coconuts, cranberries, grapes, honeydew, limes, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries

Veggies: Cauliflower, corn, eggplant, green beans, okra, sweet potatoes, turnips, winter squash
Everyone Needs to Eat More Fruits and Vegetables A growing body of research proves that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. In fact, fruits and vegetables should be the foundation of a healthy diet. Most people need to double the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat every day.

Fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and disease-fighting phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are usually related to color. Fruits and vegetables of different colors — green, yellow-orange, red, blue-purple, and white — contain their own combination of phytochemicals and nutrients that work together to promote good health. Because of this, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday can help reduce your risk of: Heart disease, High blood pressure, Type II diabetes, and certain cancers.

Because they're low in calories and high in fiber, fruits and vegetables can help you control your weight. By eating more fruits and vegetables and fewer high-calorie foods, you'll find it much easier to control your weight. Busy lives require food that's nutritious, energizing, and easy to eat on-the-go, like fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of energy and give the body many nutrients you need to keep going.

What’s a Serving? One serving of fruits and vegetables should fit within the palm of your hand — it's a lot smaller than most people think. The palm of your hand is an easy way to think about serving sizes and to see how doable it is to eat 5 to 9 servings a day, everyday. A typical portion is often more than one serving. A large salad, for example, can add up to 2 to 3 servings. Reprinted from www.5aday.gov
