WEST NILE VIRUS

A Brief History
West Nile Virus (WNV) has recently emerged into North America presenting a public awareness of the threat of disease.  The virus was first discovered in the West Nile District of Uganda in 1937.  In 1957, West Nile virus was recognized as the cause of severe inflammation of the brain and spinal column in infected elderly patients in Israel.  The first appearance of West Nile virus in the United States occurred on the east coast in 1999 and has since spread westward to almost all the states.  West Nile virus is transmitted from infected bird to mosquito to human.  The disease is not transmitted directly from animal to person or from person to person.

Symptoms of WNV
Most people who are infected with WNV will not have any type of illness. It is estimated that 20% of the people who become infected with WNV will develop West Nile fever which consists of fever, headache, body aches, skin rash on the torso and swollen lymph glands. This malaise lasts only a few days. Only a small percentage of people with West Nile virus will develop West Nile encephalitis which includes severe symptoms of headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. The duration of West Nile encephalitis can last for several weeks, although neurological effects may be permanent. Typically, symptoms appear within 3 to 14 days of infection.
