WHAT WE CAN DO TO PREVENT WEST NILE VIRUS

Keep your immune system strong!  Eat right, stay away from processed foods and sugars that deplete the immune system. Get plenty rest and exercise and drink plenty of fluids, preferably water. Keeping yourself healthy and strong is your best internal defense against any microbial intruder.

Empty standing water where possible. Major culprits are wading pools, toys, old tires and tire swings, flower pots, pet water dishes, bird baths, swimming pool covers, buckets and barrels. Take a weekly walk around your yard to check for places where water may be standing like clogged rain gutters, under the bushes or under the house.

Treat standing water that can’t be emptied with gabusia fish or Bti. briquettes.

Use safe insect repellants. Although DEET is the most effective, there are toxicity issues.   Use natural repellents that contain combinations of aloe vera, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, citrus oils and catnip.

Place mosquito netting over baby strollers and carriers when you are outdoors with infants.

Fix or install window and door screens to keep mosquitos out of buildings.

Although it’s a beautiful time of day, avoid being outside during dawn, dusk and early evening hours - that is when the mosquito is most active.

Wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure.

Skeeter proof your yard. Use citronella candles, oscillating fans, water misters and mosquito traps (if the budget allows) to deter bothersome biting insects. Bug light devices do not work for mosquitoes and they kill more of the beneficial bugs than bothersome bugs.

Visit the websites for Howard Garrett and Rohde’s Nursery  for natural and organic control techniques that really work!

If you are in need of a pest control company that uses natural and less toxic treatments, contact our friends at Steriling Pest Management!
